The Department Staff
The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is chaired by Stephen R. Colen, M.D., who joined Hackensack University Medical Center in 2002 from New York University Medical Center. Dr. Colen, who maintains offices at Hackensack University Medical Center and in New York City, has been in practice for 25 years. He is skilled in all areas of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Colen has special expertise in breast reconstruction following cancer surgery. Fifteen years ago, he developed the Immediate Breast Reconstruction Program at New York University Medical Center, which utilizes surgical techniques to reconstruct the breast immediately after its removal for breast cancer. The program has helped hundreds of women recover both physically and emotionally from breast cancer surgery.
Dr. Colen specializes in cosmetic surgery of the face and body as well as breast reconstruction. He is board certified in both general surgery and plastic surgery. He is frequently invited to lecture at national and international medical conferences. Widely published in major medical journals, Dr. Colen is an associate professor at New York University Medical Center.
Members of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery are currently participating in clinical research studies to investigate new breast reconstruction techniques that produce less scarring, lasers for hair transplantation, and cell culture techniques for cosmetic enhancement. Clinical research in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery has helped surgeons perfect their techniques and has resulted in many innovations, including the use of BOTOX® to reduce wrinkles and new ways to reduce scarring after surgery.

Magnet Nurses
No matter what type of surgical procedure you will be undergoing, you will be cared for by some of the nation’s best nurses. Hackensack University Medical Center’s nurses have been awarded the prestigious Magnet Nursing Award by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for a record nine consecutive years. The medical center was the second hospital in the nation to have achieved this award, in 1995, and has since been redesignated for two consecutive four-year terms. Magnet Award recognition has been directly attributed to the following positive practices: high patient satisfaction ratings; an excellent registered nurse-to-patient ratio; a decrease in hospital-acquired infections, falls, injuries, medical errors, and related complications; and a very low nurse turnover rate.
The medical center’s Magnet nurses work in all areas of plastic and reconstructive surgery, including assisting with procedures, monitoring patients, providing pre- and post-surgical care, and readying patients for their discharge from the medical center.
