Pediatric plastic surgery corrects abnormal structures of the body caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, or disease. A craniofacial surgeon is on staff to treat birth defects of the head and neck, including cleft lips and palates, abnormal skull shapes, and absent or malformed ears. The department works in conjunction with Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatric Cardiology, and Genetics to provide comprehensive care for congenital hand conditions through HUMC's Congenital Hand Surgery Service. Plastic and reconstructive surgeons also work cooperatively with other surgical specialists to ensure the optimal timing and cosmetic results of surgery.
Pediatric plastic surgery is performed within a caring, nurturing atmosphere. A team of childlife specialists is available at the medical center to guide and mentor each child through the medical environment. Patients recover in the medical center’s pediatric nursing unit, where pediatricians, specialized pediatric nurses, and supportive staff treat and care for children and adolescents of all ages. Hackensack University Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics established the first full-service pediatric emergency room in Bergen County. Board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeons are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to treat children’s injuries.
The Hemangioma and Pigmented Lesion Center at Hackensack University Medical Center features the skills of a dermatologic plastic surgeon. After meeting with each child’s parents, the surgeon develops a treatment plan, carefully considering the benefits of various therapeutic options, including embolization, laser therapy, and surgical resection for the treatment of hemangiomas.
Before and After Care
Because the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is located within a comprehensive medical center, all components of your treatment can take place here for the convenience and safety of our young patients.
As part of the clinical pathway that directs the entire course of treatment, your surgeon may recommend pre- and/or post-surgical treatment at one of the medical center’s programs. Patients may benefit from physical, occupational, or speech therapy at the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department; home care; or other services. Whatever your needs are, you can be conveniently accommodated at the medical center.
