Epilepsy
The Comprehensive Epilepsy Center (CEC) is a major component of PNI. Pediatric and adult patients are usually referred to CEC by their primary care physician, pediatrician or outside neurologist for the following reasons:
- To ensure an accurate diagnosis
- To determine the exact type of seizures
- To optimize medical treatment of epilepsy
Each patient undergoes a complete evaluation by our epileptologists. Video-EEG monitoring is often performed to characterize the seizure episodes. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with or without magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) may also be performed to better define any abnormalities. In addition, Wada testing and SPECT scanning may be done, when indicated. Diagnosis and treatment options are discussed by the team. The family and referring physicians are then informed of our recommendations and plans.
Although the majority of patients diagnosed with epilepsy are successfully treated with oral medications, patients with medically intractable seizures may be candidates for surgical treatments. The epilepsy surgery program at HUMC has successfully performed more than 500 major brain surgeries to control seizure disorders for patients with intractable epilepsy.
