BOY SCOUTS HONOR HACKENSACK UNIVERSITY
MEDICAL CENTER PHYSICIAN


Bernard Saccaro, M.D. of Hackensack, president of the Bergen County Medical Society, and a senior attending physician at Hackensack University Medical, was recently honored with the Distinguished Healthcare Service Award by the Northern New Jersey Council, Boys Scouts of America.

"It is a great honor to be recognized by an organization so devoted to serving such a huge number of our young people in so many ways," Dr. Saccaro said.

The award was presented to Dr. Saccaro and three other physicians from
Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties, which comprise the membership of the
Northern New Jersey Boy Scout Council.
Also honored was Howard B. Baum, M.D., a Passaic County gastroenterologist
and community leader; Charles Cunniff, M.D. of Hudson County, a former
medical director at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey; and Ruy
Lourenco, M.D. of Essex County, professor of medicine and dean, University of
Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School.

The award was presented to Dr. Saccaro during the council's "Good Scout" awards dinner held recently at the Westmount Country Club in West Paterson. Proceeds from the dinner will support two career training programs for high school students, the Career Exploring Program in Northern New Jersey, and the Health Careers Exploring Program, conducted in local hospitals and healthcare organizations.

Gary Carter, president of New Jersey's Hospital Association was honored with the "Good Scout" Award for his valued support of the Health Career Exploring program in the Learning Division of the Boy Scouts of America.

The Northern New Jersey Council is the largest nonprofit community-based youth organization serving more than 35,000 boys, young men and women in Bergen, Essex, Hudson and Passaic counties, where over 1,600 Scout meetings are held each week.

Hackensack University Medical Center, a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School and a member of the University Health System of New Jersey, is the largest provider of inpatient and outpatient services in the state of New Jersey. The medical center has been honored since 1995 as the first hospital in New Jersey to receive the Magnet Award for nursing excellence from The American Nurses Credentialing Center, and the second hospital in the nation to receive a four-year redesignation of this award. The medical center is also the recipient of the Consumer Choice Award in Bergen and Passaic counties for four consecutive years. Based on a survey of 400,000 people to determine the best hospitals in the country, the medical center was named as the hospital of choice for quality of staff, community programs, personalized care, and overall reputation.
