HACKENSACK UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM GEARED TOWARD 8- TO 13-YEAR-OLDS
Starting in June, The Dave Winfield Nutrition Center at Hackensack University Medical Center will offer "The Body Shop," a weight management program for youngsters, eight through 13.
The Body Shop helps children control their weight, develop a healthy lifestyle, and improve their self-esteem. Lorna Pascal, R.D. of Teaneck, nutrition consultant at the Dave Winfield Nutrition Center, said the program stresses a positive approach to nutrition and exercise that can lead to a lifetime of healthy habits.
"The encouragement and peer group environment of The Body Shop help children with weight issues feel less isolated," Ms Pascal said. Group support sessions conducted respectively for parents and children reinforce the program's concepts.
The eight-week series meets Tuesday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Meetings are scheduled for June 27, July 11, 18 and 25, Aug. 1, 8, 15 and 22. The session will be held based on adequate enrollment by Tuesday, June 20. The cost for The Body Shop is $200 per child, with a reduced rate of $100 for returnees. The program will be held in the Medical Plaza Building, located on the medical center campus, at 20 Prospect Ave., Hackensack. Enrollment in the program requires a physician's approval.
