Hackensack University Medical Center physician Yukiko Kimura, M.D. of Tenafly, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Advisory Council on Arthritis, a newly assembled panel of physicians who will advise the state on arthritis programs and initiatives. Dr. Kimura, an attending pediatrician in the medical center's Department of Pediatrics, serves as section chief of Pediatric Rheumatology and director of the Children's Arthritis Center, the largest treatment program for children's arthritis in New Jersey. She regards the new panel as an important and innovative program that recognizes the impact arthritis has on a relatively large population. Goals of the council will include establishing programs to promote public awareness of arthritis and to improve the quality of life of those who have arthritis.
It is estimated that arthritis currently affects more than 40 million people in the United States, Dr. Kimura said. Many people think arthritis strikes only adults, but the fact is that it affects many children as well. Juvenile arthritis is more common than many other well-known chronic diseases in children, including juvenile diabetes, sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis. The Arthritis Council's goal is to assist the state in providing adequate education and services for everyone who has arthritis.
The new council was created through the Arthritis Quality of Life Initiative Act recently approved by the state legislature.
