MEDICAL CENTER PHYSICIAN USES CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY FOR CORRECTION OF NEARSIGHTEDNESS AND ASTIGMATISM
Peter S. Hersh, M.D., director of the Cornea and Laser Eye Institute at Hackensack University Medical Center, is using a new technology to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism.
The F.D.A. recently approved this new laser system, the LADARVision excimer laser, manufactured by Autonomous Technologies, Inc. The system, which combines active eye tracking and small beam corneal shaping, follows eye movement during a laser procedure, allowing the system to more accurately aim the laser beam.
Unlike other laser systems currently in use, the LADARVision system also uses a laser beam of less than one millimeter to shape the cornea, or surface, of the eye. Nearsightedness and astigmatism can be corrected by changing the shape of cornea.
The LADARVision excimer system measures and corrects eye movement during the laser procedure, allowing for an accurate placement of the laser beam. Using the laser, the surgeon also carefully monitors your eye on a computer screen, providing additional control as the beam is moved rapidly across the corneal surface, removing corneal tissue smaller than a piece of human hair. LADARVision laser surgery produces a smooth post-operative corneal surface, so that patients may experience reduced side effects and improved recovery times.
Dr. Hersh has been recognized by his peers for his pioneering work in laser surgery. He is a professor of opthamology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School, and has been selected for Best Doctors in America. He has discussed advances in vision correction on several network television programs, and in articles printed in both national and New York metropolitan area publications.
The Cornea and Laser Eye Institute at Hackensack University Medical Center is a premier outpatient facility specializing in the correction of vision disorders such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. For further information on the institute, please call (201) 692-9434.
