| MONEY MAGAZINE NAMES MEDICAL CENTER TO ITS BEST HOSPITALS LIST HUMC Named One of the Best Hospitals for the Care of Patients with Heart Attacks and Peripheral Vascular Interventions Hackensack University Medical Center has made the grade once again. The medical center was recently named to Money Magazine’s Best Hospitals issue as one of the top facilities in the northeast for the care of both heart attack patients and those with peripheral vascular interventions. The magazine partnered with HealthGrades®, the national healthcare quality firm to compile the list. Hackensack University Medical Center received the 2003 HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ earlier this year. Money Magazine utilized the HealthGrades® data – ratings of more than 5,000 hospitals based on quality measures such as mortality and complication rates –to look at 20 common medical treatments and how hospitals in five different regions in the United States stacked up against each other. “Money Magazine and HealthGrades® really did their homework in compiling this list and I am not surprised the medical center has received rankings in not one but two specialties,” said John P. Ferguson, president and chief executive officer of the medical center. “Patients continue to make Hackensack University Medical Center their hospital of choice because in the end they know, what even more consumers now know: that we deliver superior care.” Beyond the medical center being named, Money Magazine also singled out the top three physicians in each specialty based on who saw the most patients. For heart attack they were: Stephen Angeli, M.D., Teaneck, member, Division of Cardiology; Karan Nejad, M.D., Hackensack, member, Division of Cardiology; and Paul M. Andrews, M.D., Teaneck, member, Division of Cardiology. For peripheral vascular intervention – which included procedures such as angioplasty or other interventions to open blocked artery to the arms or legs- the doctors were: Gregory Simonian, M.D., Hackensack, member, Division of Vascular Surgery; Charles Moss, M.D., Hackensack, senior attending, Department of Surgery; and Michael Innerfield, M.D., West Nyack, NY, member, Division of Cardiology. “Our high rankings in these two areas are a testament to the collaboration between physicians, nurses and all those who are part of the healthcare team,” said Louis Evan Teichholz, M.D., chief, Division of Cardiology and medical director, Cardiac Services. “It is an honor we all share in.” HealthGrades® is a healthcare-quality ratings, information, and advisory services company whose clients include healthcare providers, employers, health plans, insurance companies and consumers.
