| J.D. POWER AND ASSOCIATES REPORTS:
HACKENSACK UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER RECOGNIZED FOR PROVIDING AN OUTSTANDING PATIENT EXPERIENCE Hackensack University Medical Center, a 683-bed not-for-profit teaching and research hospital has been recognized for service excellence under the new J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital Program.SM This distinction acknowledges a strong commitment by Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) to provide an outstanding patient experience. The service excellence distinction was determined by surveying a random sample of recently discharged patients from HUMC on their perceptions of their hospital stay and comparing the results to the national benchmark established by the J.D. Power and Associates 2003 Hospital Service Performance Study.SM The research identifies five key drivers of patient satisfaction with their overall hospital experience: dignity and respect; speed and efficiency; comfort; information and communication; and emotional support. “In receiving this distinction, the medical center joins a select group of hospitals nationwide that have demonstrated the ability to consistently deliver an outstanding hospital experience to their patients,” said John P. Ferguson, president and chief executive officer of Hackensack University Medical Center. “It is especially gratifying to know that the medical center achieved its highest score on the most important dimension - Dignity and Respect – something that we take very seriously. This is another testament to the high level of care provided by our outstanding team of healthcare providers at Hackensack University Medical Center and we are honored to be recognized by J.D. Power and Associates,” he said. Based on the rigorous standards of our national hospital service performance research, which provides the qualifying benchmarks for the Distinguished Hospital Program, only 20 percent of the hospitals in the nation are expected to achieve this distinction. Hackensack University Medical Center is among this elite class of hospitals. HUMC performed especially well in providing treatment with speed and efficiency, exceeding the national benchmark score on this dimension, particularly in the areas of nurses’ promptness in responding to the call button and the availability of the doctor. HUMC also performed well relative to the national benchmark in providing comfort to patients, with high ratings on concern for comfort during procedures. Additionally, patients were asked to rate their level of trust and confidence in the hospital both before and after their most recent stay. Among Hackensack University Medical Center patients, the proportion expressing a great deal of trust and confidence in the hospital increased after their most recent stay. Furthermore, overall, trust and confidence in the hospital is markedly higher among HUMC patients compared to trust and confidence levels with hospitals among patients participating in the national study. Hackensack University Medical Center received this distinction by providing their patients with a consistent, positive experience. The caregivers, physicians and administrative staff can be proud of their contribution to the care and health of their community. On a broader note, at a time when consumers are increasingly exerting influence over the delivery of their care and seeking credible resources to make well-informed decisions, this program enables Hackensack and other top-performing hospitals to differentiate themselves in the markets they serve. This year, HUMC also received the HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence under the Distinguished Hospital Program, a collaborative effort by J.D. Power and Associates and Health Grades, Inc. The award places HUMC among a group of fewer than 200 hospitals or 3.3 percent nationally to qualify for this clinical performance distinction. Non-government, acute-care hospitals throughout the nation are eligible for the J.D. Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital recognition. Distinction is valid for one year, after which the hospital may apply for re-certification. Headquartered in Westlake Village, Calif., J.D.
