HACKENSACK UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER CONGRATULATES RECIPIENTS OF THE ALICE AND MARVIN GOTTLIEB
SUMMER SCHOLARS PROGRAM

Hackensack University Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Medical Education recently presented five college undergraduate students with The Alice and Marvin Gottlieb Summer Scholars Awards. This year’s recipients were Jason Klein, 21, of Plain View, Long Island, a senior at New York University; Jessica Fargnoli, 19, of Paramus, a sophomore at Fairleigh Dickenson University; Maggie McInerney, 19, of Wyckoff, a sophomore at the University of Virginia; Serena Jacob, 21, of Washington Township, a senior at Drew University; and Trevor Scott, 20, of Ridgewood, a junior at Williams College.

In order to be considered as candidates, the applicants must be registered as full-time students in good standing at an accredited college/university/medical school and the candidates are required to provide a statement regarding their academic interests, previous work experience, and projected career choices.

The Summer Scholars program, begun in 1980, was designed to assist college undergraduates in making an experience-based judicious career choice. The program provides an eight-week intensive educational experience in which there is active student/faculty interaction.

Sue Salvatore of Hasbrouck Heights, program coordinator for the Department of Pediatrics, helped design the program to allow students to explore various aspects of the healthcare profession.

“Students are able to experience first-hand the roles and responsibilities of clinical staff, administrative personnel, support services, and the latest technological advances in the delivery of healthcare services,” explained Ms. Salvatore.

The Summer Scholars have often received college credits for their participation in this exciting, intensive educational experience. A stipend is paid upon satisfactory completion of the summer program.

Marvin I. Gottlieb, M.D., Ph.D, chairman emeritus of the Department of Pediatrics and director emeritus of The Toys “R” Us/Kids “R” Us Institute for Child Development at The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center developed this program along with his wife Alice Gottlieb, 23 years ago. Other sponsors of the programs include: Jeffrey R. Boscamp, M.D., physician-in-chief of The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center, and associate professor of pediatrics at New Jersey Medical School; William C. Black, M.D., senior vice president for Medical Administrative Affairs and director of the Department of Medical Education at the medical center; and John P.
