MEDICAL CENTER AND TENNIS FOR LIFE OFFER FREE TENNIS LESSONS FOR BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS

The Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center and Tennis For Life are inviting breast cancer survivors to free tennis lessons and social match play time at the Ridgewood Racquet Club, located at 249 Ackerman Avenue in Ridgewood, each Wednesday evening through August 27, 2003. Lessons and play are from 7 to 8 p.m., followed by an informal “kaffee klatch.” Beginners and survivors at any stage of recovery are especially welcome. Friendship and support, learning a new skill, awakening to one’s own strength during a difficult time while surrounded by other survivors are just some of the many benefits experienced by members. Vlady Smolkin, a tennis pro who teaches the program has said, “It is a tremendous boost to survivor’s self-esteem and induces optimism.”

Tennis can help with recovery for several reasons, including that the physical activity helps to build stamina and endurance, and in regaining upper body mobility. The concentration of tennis redirects one’s mental focus from ailing to healing, which reduces stress. Tennis For Life is committed to support and enhances the lives of Breast Cancer Survivors, and is supported by donations. Joan Monaghan of Morristown, coordinator for Psycho-Social Services at Hackensack University Medical Center’s Cancer Center said, “It’s a way for those with breast cancer to expand their horizons.” For more information or to register, please call Teri Grayner at (201) 385-3937.
