Julius M. Gardin, M.D. is Chair of the Department of Medicine at Hackensack University Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and Touro University College of Medicine. He has distinguished himself as a cardiac researcher, clinical cardiologist, teacher, and administrator/program builder.
Dr. Gardin earned his undergraduate and medical degrees with honors from the University of Michigan. He completed his internship in Internal Medicine at University of Michigan-affiliated hospitals and then completed a fellowship in Cardiology under W. Proctor Harvey, M.D., at Georgetown University Hospital.
Prior to his current Hackensack University Medical Center appointment in 2008, Dr. Gardin most recently served as St. John Guild Distinguished Chair in Cardiovascular Diseases (2000-2007), Vice-Chair for Research, Department of Medicine at St. John Hospital and Medical Center (2007-2008), and Professor of Medicine, Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan (2001-2008) and Professor of Medicine and Chief, Division of Cardiology at the University of California, Irvine (1995-2000).
Dr. Gardin has held numerous visiting professorships nationally and internationally and has been an invited lecturer on topics related to echocardiography and clinical cardiology around the world. He is a former President of the American Society of Echocardiography, International Cardiac Doppler Society, and Council on (Society of) Geriatric Cardiology. He was awarded the Seymour Gordon Award for Distinguished Achievement by the Detroit chapter of the American Heart Association and was active in securing a Blue Cross Center of Excellence Award and certification by Solucient® for St. John Hospital for being one of the top 100 cardiovascular hospitals and one of the top 15 major medical teaching hospitals.
Dr. Gardin has made important contributions to cardiac investigation through research funded by the American Heart Association, the National Institutes of Health (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute) and the medical industry. His ongoing research has focused on the used of echocardiography and other non-invasive tests to evaluate the epidemiology of subclinical and clinical cardiovascular disease. Dr. Gardin’s research has helped to elucidate the role of non-invasive cardiac imaging in predicting the risk of developing heart attacks and stroke. He has been an author of more than 175 original articles, in addition to textbook chapters and review articles, and has presented over 200 abstracts at scientific meetings. Dr. Gardin also serves on multiple editorial boards and is currently an Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography.
Dr. Gardin has developed programs in preventive cardiology, lipid clinic, lipid laboratory approved by the Centers for Disease Control, computed tomographic coronary angiography, carotid stenting, and peripheral vascular intervention. With National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, he established a core echocardiography laboratory for multicenter studies—including the National Institutes of Health-sponsored Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS), Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA), and Heart Failure-ACTION. With American Heart Association funding, he has studied subclinical cardiovascular disease for Mexican-Americans. Other accomplishments include being the first named co-inventor and patent holder for “Method for Determining Blood Flow Through a Narrowed Orifice Using Color Doppler Echocardiography,” having received a Certificate Healthcare Administration from UCLA and having spent a research sabbatical year (funded by the National Institutes of Health) in a cardiac molecular biology laboratory at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
